Are We Back Where We Started?!

Do you remember what it felt like this past fall, before the Omicron variant appeared? Covid restrictions were beginning to relax. Vaccines and Covid tests were widely available. We were looking forward to holidays spent in-person with all of our loved ones.

Then the new Covid variant hit.

All of a sudden, our big holiday plans unraveled. We scrambled to find rapid tests. And we had a ton of questions:

Would kids go back to school after the holidays? Would we still go forward with our epic 2022 plans? Would restrictions become more strict? Would we be able to keep ourselves safe from getting a highly contagious strain?

While some of those questions have since been answered, our feelings of confusion and uncertainty are still present. On top of this, many of us are in a state of despair.

Yes, much progress has been made. We understand this virus more and more each day, and more and more people are getting vaccinated. But at the same time, it almost feels like we’re back where we started.

The virus doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon. In fact, it seems to be getting worse.

This impacts us all in many ways. Young people in particular are facing a unique set of challenges.

Many young people feel like their lives are supposed to be just getting started, but instead they are stuck at a standstill. They’re ready to learn at post-secondary school, start their career and make meaningful connections. Meanwhile, they are being told to stay indoors and limit their in-person interactions. They feel trapped, literally.

The difference between what young people thought this time of their life would look like and what they’re actually experiencing is glaring. They’re tired of riding it out. They’re ready to drive.

Even before Covid, we have been keenly aware of the challenges that young people face. I myself have five kids between the ages of 22 and 28. Many of our coaching clients are the parents of adult children who they aren’t sure how to help. Some of our clients have even asked us what coaching options we have available for their younger employees.
